- The blockbuster film, "Independence Day", certainly is capturing "money,
- crowds and American psyche", as L.A. Times today (Sunday, July 7, 1996)
- reported in its front page article under the headline, "CONQUERED". The
- film, regardless of its incoherent script, awkward dialogues and less than
- mediocre acting (the film looked to me as if it were written by and
- geared towards twelve-year-olds), is breaking Box Office records and it's
- not slowing down. To quote L.A. Times, the film "hit the jackpot with a
- combination of zealous and well-positioned advertising, a critical mass of
- unpaid publicity including the simultaneous covers of Time and Newsweek
- and capitalization on the public's deeply rooted desire to unite against a
- common enemy". It is this central message of the film that seems to be
- drawing audiences all over. Along with the film, the universal name
- recognition and concept of "AREA 51" as a defacto "alien"-related secret
- base is now deeply beginning to be ingrained in the mindset of a sector of
- the American public. No matter how one looks at it, films like ID4 and
- the earlier-released THE ARRIVAL seem to be part of mechanisms that are
- conditioning the public to one thing. And that is the fear of the
- unknown. "A common enemy will unite the public" type of thing. The
- portrayal of alien entities as "sinister" beings ready to colonize the
- earth is the central theme of these films. This idea somehow appears to
- be part of a conditioning mechanism promoted by SOMEONE!!?? or SOME
- GROUP!!?? for a certain convenient agenda in the very near future (even
- though there seems to be no tangible evidence whatsoever so far that the
- alien presence is a reality or that there is something "alien" about AREA
- 51, despite the claims of Bob Lazar and the like). Stuart Fischoff, a
- professor of media psychology at Cal State L.A. brilliantly states that
- "this movie delves into some very archetypal needs and myths.....there is
- an idea that we, as people, have been fragmented since a primodial
- time....anything that can provide us with the illusion of oneness and
- unity will have an appeal".
- Perhaps a new way of looking at the significance of these films should be
- focused upon. To this end, I would suggest those in these newsgroups to
- take a look at an article that appeared in an Australian magazine called
- NEW DAWN.
