- The Rangers were impacters but when they got close they took excellent
- pictures. The Lunar orbiters took really excellent photographs that
- had resolutions on the order of 1 meter. The later LO 4 and 5 were
- high altitude mapper missions so their resolutions were much less than
- the earlier 1,2, and 3 missions. Surveyors were video mounted soft
- landers, then came Apollo with the mapping cameras, Hasselblads, and
- video cameras. All of these old missions had several orders of
- magnitude better resolution than Clementine.
-
- The technique that Clem used was a high altitude (400 Km) orbit that
- maintained the sun directly over the area that Clem was looking at.
- The UV, Near and Far IR cameras, were looking for certain absorbtion
- and fluoresent features at various wavelengths controlled by filters
- on board Clem. This was primarily a geological mapping exercise and
- visual definition was very low on the list of priorities. Clems
- resolution was about 100 meters per pixel. That was if the image was
- uncompressed. If they compressed it, which they didd for almost all of
- them, the resolution degraded to about 200 meters per pixel.

- In answer to your question about the confirmation of the Hoagland
- artifacts. We cannot confirm the shard yet. There is a recognized
- micro-atmosphere, there is something in Crisium that is in the process
- of being confirmed. We have found the pictures (original negatives) of
- the Blair Cuspids and we will solicit independant verifications of his
- findings. We are in the process of electronic surveillance of
- the moon searching for transient phenomenon, we have found another
- oddity in Tranquility for which we are ordering negatives from NSSDC.
- Confirm Hoagland? We have more new stuff than we can cope with. Let
- Hoagland confirm our findings when we are published. We do not rush to
- conclusions or premature speculations. But we will publish on our web
- site throughout the process, and invite comment.
-
- Thanks for the kind comments.
