DNA Groove Templates - A Revolution in Sequencing
ReadMe File for Cakewalk DNA Default Set.
Let's make one thing clear: the best way to use the grooves is through trial and error. Jump right in. Take a stab in the dark and wait for those inevitable happy accidents to occur.
Welcome to the wild world of Groove Quantize. This new feature of Cakewalk will change the way you view rhythmic processing forever. Don't be intimidated. You won't wreck anything. After browsing through, you can restore your original performance by hitting Cancel instead of OK.
DNA Groove Templates are carbon copies of live performances by great musicians who have great feels. These templates are provided in Cakewalk to allow powerful rhythmic processing of MIDI sequences.
DNA breaks down audio material into its rhythmic components. The relationship between the notes is captured and translated into a 2-bar Cakewalk Groove Template. You can create your own grooves from MIDI data. This means you can create a library of feels, the same way you create a library of sounds for synths and samplers.
DNA GROOVES for Cakewalk
DNA_DFCW.GRV contain 12 different DNA Groove Templates that are derived from actual performances by real musicians. The rhythm or feel of each groove is unique. They are grouped in 4 groups of 3. All grooves share the same velocity information. The grooves can be accessed directly from Cakewalk's Groove Quantize window and you can edit or augment the sets with your own performances.
01.SHUFFLES
These are among the most pleasing feels in popular music. Many Rock, Motown and Dance hits are shuffles. There are Soft and Hard shuffles which describe the degree of impact the shuffle will have on the listener.
04.STRAIGHT
These grooves are perfect if you want to introduce small changes in the feel of your music. The templates are subtle but are non-linear. These are not random generated humanized feels - these straight feels are derived from actual music.
07.PUSHING FEELS
If you want to propel notes ahead of the quantize points these templates work very well, especially for hard driving Rock, Jazz, Country, Latin or Fusion. Once again experiment, these are timing references - and don't forget to utilize the Strength Control 0 to 100% to control the amount of grooving.
10.LAID BACK
This kind of feel is typical of Motown, Soul, Dance and Ballads. Many classic Motown hits of the 60s and 70s have a distinct progressive lagging within each bar. That is to say note fall further from the quantize points successively for each bar.
VELOCITY
DNA Groove Templates also encode a Velocity map with the timing template. This contains velocity information that feature classic and exotic dynamic feels that can transform your music. Cakewalk allows you to control the balance between your dynamics and that of the template. This makes for an extremely powerful dynamics processor.
DURATION
No deliberate duration information is encoded in the Cakewalk Default Set. Templates with Duration feels will be forthcoming in the DNA Groove sets that will be available for Cakewalk in 94.
