  1.             50 WAYS TO SAVE TIME AND $$$ WITH CLOCKMAN
  2.  
  3. This is a short list of things you can do with ClockMan.  We sometimes
  4. get the question - "ClockMan is great looking, but how can it help me?"
  5. The following are things that ClockMan do...
  6.  
  7. FOR ANYBODY
  8. -----------
  9. 1)  De-fragment hard disks on off hours safely.
  10. 2)  Do nightly virus scans.
  11. 3)  Automatic monthly download of virus signatures
  12. 4)  Print monthly/weekly/daily schedules or "to-do" lists in PackRat or
  13.     Commence.
  14. 5)  Run a "chkdsk /f" command on a nightly basis.
  15. 6)  Print checks in Quicken or your favorite DOS accounting/payroll 
  16.     program.
  17. 7)  Play audible waveform files to alert when jobs are done.
  18. 8)  Run diagnostic software like "Check-It!" on nightly basis.
  19. 9)  Pop up box with diagnostic results every morning.

  21. FOR THE NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
  22. -----------------------------
  23. 10) Back up hard disks with your favorite Windows or command-line driven
  24.     DOS software.
  25. 11) Copy select sensitive files to floppy drive or network backup drive.
  26. 12) Encrypt files during off hours with hDC's File Apps Encryption 
  27.     Application (a time consuming process).
  28. 13) Move files from remote machines on a network for security to a safe 
  29.     designated drive on the network.
  30. 14) Start specified applications at certain times (normal, minimized, 
  31.     maximized or hidden).
  32. 15) Close specified applications at certain times.
  33. 16) Determine whether an application is running and either start it if 
  34.     it's not or close it if it is running.
  35. 17) Start applications in sequence.  When one finishes, the next one 
  36.     will start.
  37. 18) Find files on local or network hard drives for later retrieval.
  38. 19) Change file attributes at times when they need to be protected.
  39. 20) Delete files at certain times of the day.
  40. 21) Change entries in the WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI for end users.
  41. 22) Activate running Windows applications that always need to be run but 
  42.     may not be active.
  43. 23) Create and remove groups in Program Manager via DDE to accommodate 
  44.     casual Windows users that need certain configurations in order to be 
  45.     productive.
  46. 24) Change the "shell" Windows uses for certain days.
  47. 25) Establish network connections.
  48. 26) Disconnect network users.  Useful when re-booting or performing other 
  49.     maintenance.
  50. 27) Remind users (in appropriate groups) to change password.
  51. 28) Have ClockMan check disk drives and only warn you when free space 
  52.     falls below a certain percentage.
  53.  
  54. FOR DTP PEOPLE
  55. --------------
  56. 29) Print complex PageMaker, Corel Draw! or Adobe Illustrator files off 
  57.     hours.
  58. 30) Print "Postscript" ASCII files.
  59. 31) Download fonts
  60. 32) Reset printers.
  61. 33) Invoke network command "Stop sharing printer" to allow 
  62.     uninterrupted high priority task.
  63.  
  64. FOR POWER USERS
  65. ---------------
  66. 34) Dial up CompuServe, GEnie or America On-Line to retrieve mail off 
  67.     hours when traffic is lighter and throughput is at its peak 
  68.     efficiency.
  69. 35) Get stock quotes.
  70. 36) Update Excel spreadsheets with new stock data.
  71. 37) Send CheckFree transactions off hours.
  72. 38) Have Windows Cardfile send you a wake up call so that a "wake up
  73.     service" isn't necessary.
  74. 39) Send faxes off hours when rates are low and faxes are less likely to 
  75.     be busy.
  76. 40) Send keystrokes to Windows and DOS applications just as if the user 
  77.     were there.
  78. 41) Check system resources and restart Windows if resources are below a 
  79.     predetermined acceptable level.
  80. 42) Have the PC Magazine utility WTIME call the NIST atomic clock during
  81.     off hours automatically once a month.
  82. 43) Have ClockMan "bump" the system time up or down each day or each
  83.     week to minimize long distance calls to the NIST to set the system
  84.     clock.
  85. 44) Have ClockMan invoke the DOS program ROBOCOMM to receive .QWK
  86.     packets and to send .REP packets to Fidonet and RelayNet.
  87. 45) If you need to have PC Tools or Norton Desktop "grep" your network's
  88.     hard disks for a file containing a certain name or string, it could
  89.     take hours.  So if it's not immediately critical, then have ClockMan
  90.     do it overnight.
  91.  
  92. FOR THE PROGRAMMER
  93. ------------------
  94. 46) Print long source code listings to a line printer.
  95. 47) Start daily Microsoft Test suites.
  96. 48) Run PVCS (version control) & output to report.
  97. 49) Use WIL to check file dates and do a conditional back-up and compile.
  98. 50) Keep programming team on time for project meetings.
