Using the Search Tool

The Search Tool, as it's name implies, is an internal command to search for files and folders.  The Search Tool can search for folders and/or files anywhere on the computer starting with a one or more folder locations.  Folders and files can be searched by using not only their names, but also their content, attributes, and timestamp data.  The Search Tool is activated using the Search Command.

The Search for Files and Folders dialog is displayed when the Search Tool is activated.

Search Criteria

The following basic criteria can be used when searching for folders and files:

Folder/file filename pattern

The folder and/or file search pattern is entered into the "Search for" edit control.  The pattern can include the standard Window's wildcard characters "*" and "?".  This control also includes a dropdown list which contains a history of previously used patterns which can be reused.

The Search Tool assumes a "*" wildcard at the beginning and end of the search pattern.

Multiple file patterns can be supplied separating them with a ";" character.

If the pattern is left blank then all folders and files will match the pattern.

Exact match

The [ ] Exact Match control, when checked, forces an exact match of the file name pattern (effectively removing the assumed "*" at the start and end of the file patterns).

Contains text

The Contains Text edit control is used to specify text located inside the target file.  In order to match the search criteria the file must contain the specified text.  A [ ] Case sensitive checkbox is provided to control if the content must match case.

This control also supports a dropdown list which contains a history of previously used content text patterns which can be reused.

If this field is left blank then no content matching is performed.

Search in

The Search In edit control is used to specify the folders where the search will start from.  The controls contains a dropdown list which contains a history of previously used Search locations which can be reused.  A browse button [...] is also provided to allow for removing items from the search path, browsing for new starting search locations, or adding all local drives.

The Search In control supports multiple search paths.  Search paths are separated using a semicolon ";" character.  The [Browse] button includes a menu entry to "Add path..." which will append a browsed path to the search path.

The [ ] Search In Subfolders checkbox defines whether the search is limited to the paths listed in the Search In control or whether all subfolders (recursively) are also to be included.

Advanced Search Criteria

Advanced Search criteria is available on the Advanced tab.  The following criteria is supported:

Date

The Date section, when enabled by checking the [ ] Date checkbox, allows specifying a range of dates for the search criteria.  You can select one of: Creation Data, Modified Date, and Accessed Date.

You must specify both the starting and ending dates and times for the range.  Only files and folders matching the date/time range will be included in the search results.

Size

The Size section, when enabled by checking the [ ] Size checkbox, allows specifying a range of sizes for the search criteria.

You must specify both the minimum and maximum sizes.  Only files and folders matching the size range will be included in the search results.

Note that folders are assumed to have a size of "0" and will not match any searches with a minimum size above that.

Attributes

The Attributes section, when enabled by checking the [ ] Attributes checkbox, allows specifying an attribute mask as part of the search criteria.

Each attribute is controlled by a tri-state checkbox.  Attributes which are checked must have that attribute set in order to match the search criteria.  Attributes which are unchecked must have that attribute clear in order to match the search criteria.  Attributes which are in the third state are treated as "don't cares" and the state of that attribute is ignored for the search criteria,

Save settings

The [ ] Save Settings checkbox allows for the saving of the advanced search criteria between searches as well as between Just Manager sessions (ie. the settings are saved and will be restored the next time Just Manager is run).

Once all of the search criteria has been entered the [Search] button can be pressed.  The results of the search are displayed in the Results panel.
