Day 007 - 06 Jul 94 - Page 06

1 A. Well, from experience that I have seen, we have had
difficulty recycling polystyrene, but it appeared that we
2 had a better opportunity to recycle polystyrene. When we
tried to recycle paper packaging, due to inks and codings
3 we might put on the paper to prevent food absorption into
the paper and sloppiness, it is very difficult between
4 that and the food contamination in the paper package to
recycle the paper. It is not like a newspaper that is
     5 clean of contaminates.

6 Q. Of the 3 Rs, reduction, recycle, re-use, does any of them
have, sort of, pride of place as being the most effective
7 way of restricting pollution of the environment?
              A. Certainly, source reduction. We emphasise that twice
8 as much over any other options. We have communicated to
all our suppliers that we do emphasise source reduction,
9 both of the actual package we purchase and of their
              manufacturing process.
    10
MR. MORRIS: Could we go a little more slowly? I am finding it
11 hard to keep up. I did not catch the last question.

12 MR. JUSTICE BELL: If it is any guidance to you, I am keeping
up but I am having to concentrate hard. I am all for
13 rattling through things and I take succour from the fact
I can always go back to this anyway, but since the request
    14 has been made----

15 MR. RAMPTON: May I say this, my Lord? I am anxious
Mr. Kouchoukos' evidence should finish at a reasonable
16 time today. I will not, if your Lordship will forgive me,
go as slowly as I would in the old days.
    17
MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, because you do not have to wait for my
    18 note to catch up.

19 MR. RAMPTON: Exactly. But I will try to slow down a bit.

20 MR. MORRIS: Can you just ask the last question?

21 MR. RAMPTON: I had asked this, I think.

22 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You were asked about the comparison between
recycling polystyrene and paper. The answer we have is:
23 From experience I have seen we had difficulty recycling
polystyrene. Then the note reads -- I am not sure it is
24 exactly accurate -- "We will have a better opportunity to
recycle polystyrene". I will just read the note: "When we
25 tried to paper package due to markings", I think it was
codings, "we might put on the paper". You said there was
26 a problem about that with regard to possible food
              contamination.
    27
The next question of the three Rs, reduction, recycling,
28 re-use, does any of them have a pride of place as being
the most effective way, and you said "source reduction"?
    29 A. The first R, reduction.

30 Q. That was the first option. You valued that twice as much
as any of the other two options?
