Day 007 - 06 Jul 94 - Page 12

1 I should not give evidence.

2 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I knew it would not be long before I showed
my ignorance to the modern world.
     3
MR. RAMPTON: It reads on, Mr. Kouchoukos: "The pickle pail
4 weighs 6.25 lbs or (2,837.5g), which equates to 0.86 grams
of packaging per pickle". Is that the total?
5 A. The total weight of the pail?

6 Q. The total weight of packaging per pickle is 0.86 grams?
              A. Correct.
     7
         Q. "If you buy pickles in the grocery store you buy them in a
8 jar. This jar contains about 56 pickles and weighs 395
grams, or just over 7 grams of packaging per pickle. Then
9 add in the corrugated shipping container and paperboard
dividers" - that is when the pickled jars arrive in the
    10 grocery shop, is it?
              A. So they do not break up, yes.
    11
         Q. "And you are up to over 9 grams of packaging per pickle.
12 For pickles, that equates to more than ten times as much
              packaging"?
13 A. It is a good illustrative point.

14 Q. To get down to 2.5 per cent overall, there must have been
areas in which the household have advantage over the
    15 store?
              A. Correct.
    16
         Q. "Though the disposal primary package that the consumer
17 throws out at the restaurant appears to generate more
solid waste than a home cooked meal, this evaluation,
18 though rudimentary, disagrees with that general
perception". Then you attach your charts which anybody
19 can ask you about that wants to do so. You agree that the
analysis you did here was fairly rudimentary?
    20        A.  It was.  It made assumptions, reasonable assumptions;
              it was valid though.
    21
         Q. Do you have any cause now to feel uncomfortable with your
    22 findings?
              A. I do not. I was pleasantly surprised. I had the
23 perception also, but in reasonably evaluating it it was
              not the case.
    24
         Q. You can leave that file because we are going to come to it
25 again in a moment. Mr. Kouchoukos, I want to ask you
specifically, first of all, about polystyrene foam and
26 then we will go on to paper and trees?
              A. OK.
    27
         Q. First of all, what is polystyrene foam?
28 A. Polystyrene foam is a plastic material starting with
polystyrene and there is a blowing agent injected into it
29 -- let me go back a little. Polystyrene is -----

30 Q. Can I take it in stages?
              A. OK.
