13 as it were, this is August 1987.
14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 377 of the bundle. In fact, for the
record, the first page referred to was 1A, page 385; the
15 table then referred to with the 15.3 years and 120 years
was page 547; the personnel page is 374 and we are now at
16 page 377.
17 MR. RAMPTON: I am grateful to your Lordship. When was SORG
established, do you know? This report is August 1987?
18 A. 1986.
19 Q. Do you know what the reasons for its being established
were?
20 A. The reason for it being established was that already
in 1986 there was considerable unease in both the
21 meteorological office and the Department of the
Environment about the potential impact of
22 chlorofluorocarbons on the atmosphere, particularly the
upper atmosphere. It was, therefore, deemed to be
23 beneficial to get together a team of experts in the area
to give an up to date and accurate assessment of what the
24 potential future problems might be.
25 Q. Can I ask you one other preliminary question? Forgive me
if it is a silly one to your ear. In your discipline of
26 this field, do people throughout the world exchange
information about the subject?
27 A. Yes.
28 Q. About a week before last were you at a conference in
Ireland?
29 A. I was.
30 Q. Was that an international conference?
A. Yes, it was.
