MS. STEEL: I got passed a note and it distracted my
2 attention.
3 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Obviously, we do not want any more pauses
than is necessary, but it is better to have it straight in
4 your mind before you say it.
5 MS. STEEL: Yes.
6 MR. MORRIS: Are you here today as an independent academic or
as a McDonald's consultant?
7 A. I would say I am here as both.
8 MS. STEEL: So who made the initial contact? Was it you or
McDonald's?
9 A. I went ---
10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: In relation to this case or working for them
at all?
11
MS. STEEL: No, working for them at all?
12 A. I went to see McDonald's, but then when I was setting
up my business I went to see a lot of companies.
13
Q. Why were you going around to see a lot of companies?
14 A. I was looking for business.
15 Q. Was it something to do with you were concerned about the
diet of the nation and you wanted to see some way of
16 making improvements on that?
A. I think that would be a fair comment, yes.
17
Q. Right. McDonald's was a company which you felt could make
18 some improvements?
A. Quite frankly, my view on achieving the dietary
19 targets, which are now in tablets of stone in the health
of the nation, if these targets are to be achieved, first
20 of all it depends on persuading the population, generally,
that they need to take healthy eating seriously, but
21 probably much more importantly we need to persuade food
companies they have a role and a responsibility to help
22 promote healthy eating, but also to make it easier for
people to make changes in their diet which are in line
23 with the recommendations.
24 Q. That was your purpose when you went to McDonald's?
A. That was really one of the rationales behind going
25 into business in the first place.
26 Q. You have just mentioned the health of the nation white
paper, which actually I do not think has been disclosed.
27
MR. RAMPTON: It is exhibit 2.
28
MS. STEEL: I still have not had my set to look at, so sorry if
29 I got that wrong, as I did not have a file served on me.
When you say that McDonald's supports the health of the
30 nation white paper, what does that mean in practice?
A. First of all, McDonald's does have -- it now does have
