Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 16

1 MR. RAMPTON: Perhaps, my Lord, the best thing would be for
Professor Wheelock to take volume VI of the pink file and
2 look at section A and see if he can identify the document
that he is speaking of. There are perhaps two documents
     3 that -----

4 MS. STEEL: I did actually state instore publications.

5 MR. RAMPTON: I think one document might be the document at
              tab 2 at page 36.
     6
MS. STEEL: Yes, we have established it is 1989.
     7
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Remember, for the moment, the question
     8 related to instore information.
              A. Yes. This one was certainly instore in July 1989.
     9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which one are you looking at now?
    10
MS. STEEL: Are you on No.2?
    11 A. Yes, it is tab 2.

12 Q. What about the ones before that?
              A. Volume VI.
    13
         Q. I think there is 4A?
14 A. I know there was one that Dr. Juliet Gray was involved
in which is, I think that is tab 4A.
    15
MR. MORRIS: Yes, that is 1985, June 85, as far as I can see,
    16 I think.

    17 MR. RAMPTON: 4B is February 1985.

18 MS. STEEL: I think we can see from those two that the
saturated fat content is not listed.
19 A. As far as publicly available is concerned, I am not
sure if it was available before 1989, but it was certainly
20 in the 1989 publication. But again I should say this. In
general, as far as the public perception on these issues
21 was concerned, following the COMA report of 1984, the
emphasis, I think, was mainly on total fat. Then it was
22 really between 1984 and the publication of the grey book
in 1991 that I think public evidence -- sorry, public
23 concern about saturated fat was growing over that period.

24 Again I think if you look at what has been happening in
the rest of the industry, there has been a gradual shift
25 in emphasis from concern about total fat to concern about
saturated fat over that period. So that even if it was
26 not until 1989 that McDonald's first produced information
on saturated fat, that would really be in tune with the
27 public awareness and how it was changing over that period.

28 MS. STEEL: Total fat is a concern, is it not?
              A. Yes, it is.
    29
         Q. In relation to diet, it is not just saturated fat?
30 A. Yes, but I think, as I explained yesterday, we have
now reached a position in this country where we are pretty
