Day 039 - 20 Oct 94 - Page 05
MS. STEEL: I do not think that you mentioned the very last
paragraph before "regulatory status", which is about some
consumers reporting and hyperactive children.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. All I am seeking to do is to pick out,
because I understand what is said about what I read about
the animal studies and the regulatory status. I can read
that on the page. All I am doing is looking, because it
interests me in the light of the extensive use of these
compounds and additives over a period of time. One aspect
for me is to see what evidence there is of adverse reaction
in humans.

I am not excluding the other aspects from my consideration,
because that is the part, it seemed to me, that you were
not particularly looking to but might at the end of the day
prove to be important. That is all.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Dr. Millstone, maybe if you go
through what you think is particularly important in your
statement regarding Sunset Yellow. Then I will try to see
how that fits into our various categories.
A. I think -- forgive me -- I did not write down the
sequence in which the categories were taken. It was?

MR. MORRIS: The first one is -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you got your statement there?
A. I have indeed got it, but it is not organised in that
particular order. If you would be kind enough to
indicate?

Q. Have you not got it in page order?
A. No, I have my statement and it is organised compound by
compound, but the particular headings you invited me to
comment under ----

MR. MORRIS: The fourth category -----?
A. Intolerant reaction.

Q. - intolerance, including allergies; second is
carcinogenicity, hyperactivity and -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then you added "other long-term adverse
effects".
A. OK, fine. I will happily proceed on that basis. As
far as intolerant reactions are concerned, I have referred
in my statement, in my written statement, to a few
fragments of evidence indicating that Sunset Yellow has
been shown to provoke occasional skin eruptions in some
sensitive consumers. There is no information on frequency
in that respect.

In relation to carcinogenicity there is evidence that in
some laboratory animals at relatively high doses there have
been, apparently, significant changes at relatively high
doses which, on statistical analysis by comparison with
controls, turn out to be statistically insignificant in
circumstances where there was a high background incidence
of those tumours in both sexes in those studies.
