Day 045 - 03 Nov 94 - Page 17
"The relationship of Ronald with children in a commercial
should be emotional and not physical. For example, Ronald
should not grab children, pick children up, carry children
on his shoulder, etc."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you should check in your own time
that what you have put in relation to 1985 is the same in
1987.

MS. STEEL: I have actually got a list. On page 96, it goes
on:

"ronald mcdonald is not a pitchman! He does not sell
products or premiums to children or directly request
donations to specific charities."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a bit much to expect to me to look at
the 1985 in one hand and the 1987 in the other, to check
that the things you put in relation to 1985 are accurate
for 1987.

MS. STEEL: All the things about the characters that I have gone
into so far-----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But are they in the same wording?

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are?

MS. STEEL: Yes, with the exception of-----

MR. RAMPTON: I am told by Mrs. Brinley-Codd that, for example,
Grimace is different.

MS. STEEL: It does actually say: "While initially conceived as
a character that represents McDonald's shakes, Grimace has
transcended his role." I do not think that is very
different from what was said before

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The 1985 bit you put had words to that
effect.

MS. STEEL: It says exactly the same.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you going to put some more parts?

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not put them from tab 7?

MS. STEEL: Yes, okay.

(To the witness) Going on to The Hamburglar:

"The Hamburglar is the most mischievous character in all
McDonaldland. His main purpose in life is the acquisition
of McDonald's hamburgers and he is not above borrowing them
with no thought of payment. (And nobody expects payment.)
He is also not above playing pranks on the other
