rubbish, they used to place them sometimes two on one side,
two another side.

Q. They were not fixtures, these bins, they were movable bins?
A. Yes, they were.

Q. Looking at your map have you still got the map open?
A. Yes, sir, I do.

Q. Opposite McDonald's, the other side of Royal Avenue, was
there one of the big supermarkets in your day?
A. Yes, there was.

Q. Which was that, I have forgotten?
A. Actually, I do not remember -- sorry, it was Waitrose.

Q. Yes. Did they sell take-away food, sandwiches, matters of
that kind?
A. Yes, they did.

Q. What was the policy when you were the manager of the Kings
Road about picking up other people's environment/index.html">litter as well as
McDonald's?
A. We picked up everything.

Q. In those days, up until May 1993, what did you do with all
rubbish in store and environment/index.html">litter patrol rubbish that you
collected during the course of a day -- you mentioned a
compactor?
A. Yes, we used to compact it and I used to use the cages
which we -- the Golden West Company use it for the delivery
of goods, of products.

Q. This is a sort of wire cage, is it?
A. Yes, it is a wire cage with four wheels, and we used to
compact the rubbish and the rubbish used to go inside the
cage, and it used to be, one cage used to be inside the
lift, one used to stay downstairs, and if there was a need
then there was one environment/index.html">litter landing just in front of the lift
which has a front door, so the rubbish used to be kept
there. When these people who used to come in to collect
the rubbish, those cages used to be rolled out and they
used to compact it.

Q. This place where they collected the rubbish from where
there was the lift and the landing and the cages, was that
at the front of the restaurant or not?
A. No, no, it was in the Royal Avenue but it has a wooden
door so it was not only the lift door but in front of that
there was a wooden door which we used to lock.

Q. So did the rubbish lorry have to come down into Royal
Avenue?
A. No, it was very difficult to turn, and so it had to
stay at the front because the turning in Royal Avenue is
very narrow and if the cars are parked, local residents'
cars, it could not come in.

Q. So it stayed in the Kings Road?
A. That is correct, sir.
