Day 074 - 16 Jan 95 - Page 15
The Defendants are trying to create a picture of continuous
and perhaps vociferous public complaints from the residents
of the area about the amount of environment/index.html">litter generated by
McDonald's in Kings Road. I would like to have your
reaction, your overall impression, of your relationship
with the local residents in relation to the question of
environment/index.html">litter. Do not bother about smells or noise because that
is nothing to do with this case. Try to concentrate on
environment/index.html">litter. Try to give us an impression over the two-year
period what sort of relationship you had with local
residents in relation to the question of environment/index.html">litter. Can you
do that for me, please?
A. Yes, certainly. I think I had an outstanding
relationship with my local residents and because we used to
carry out this environment/index.html">litter patrol so thoroughly that even
Dr. Taylor, or anybody, never came to me highlighting any
problem area whatsoever. So, I can only say that we had an
outstanding relationship. There was absolutely no problem
whatsoever. They were aware because I remember that our
Chairman, when he came down to visit Kings Road, I showed
him my half of the pavement and the other half of the Royal
Avenue, and I said: "Look, we do such a nice scrubbing job
that you could literally see the difference in one half and
another".

Q. Scrubbing job, what is that?
A. Scrubbing the pavement.

Q. You used to scrub the pavement?
A. Yes, we used to scrub the pavement and wash it down.

Q. What, just outside the restaurant or for -----
A. Outside and around the restaurant.

Q. What, all around the restaurant, back and sides as well as
front?
A. Back and side; there were two sides actually, one is
front, one is side.

Q. I am going to hold it up. Do you recognise this leaflet
headed "Litter and The Law"?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Do you have these at Barnet?
A. Yes, sir, we do.

Q. Did you have them at Kings Road?
A. Yes, sir, I did.

Q. Do you know when they were first produced?
A. No, I do not recall it, sir.

Q. Do you remember them at Kensington High Street or not?
A. To be honest with you, I do not remember.

Q. I am going, my Lord, with your Lord's permission, to
lighten a grey Monday morning by producing some items.
What I would like you to do, Mr. Siddique, I am going to
show them to the Defendants first. It is a carry out bag
-- there is no food in there so you do not have to worry
