Day 077 - 25 Jan 95 - Page 28

  Q. To what extent is -- this may be obvious already, I do not
know, but I will ask it just the same -- your relationship
       with McDonald's a co-operative venture?
       A. Oh, absolutely. I mean, it is developing all the
time. McKey and McDonald's are so closely intermeshed and
geared in together, and it goes across the whole spectrum,
from costing and the business side of it, through the
development side of it, through the production side of it.
McDonald's people come in and out the plant without any
       appointment -- they just arrive.

  Q. We will see later on -- perhaps today -- some letters
written by you back in the 80s on McDonald's paper?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What was the reason for that?
       A. Well ----

  Q. 1983?
       A. Well, in those days McDonald's were the largest
shareholder; it was a McDonald's company. There were
occasionally specific situations where I had permission to
use McDonald's paper and sign it accordingly.

  Q. I think I am entitled to ask you this, but his Lordship
will tell me if I am not, you say that McDonald's have more
stringent requirements or attitudes towards animal welfare
than many of your other customers; is that right?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He said in relation to supermarkets was the
       particular reference, I think.

  MR. RAMPTON: Than supermarkets do?
       A. Please could I amplify that, sir?

  Q. By all means.
       A. I am sure that within the supermarkets they do have
animal welfare concerns, but from the buying departments
coming in through the plant and discussing packaging and
specification, animal welfare does not come up as an
issue. But I am not saying that the supermarkets are not
       conscious of animal welfare.

  Q. But it does come up with the McDonald's people, does it?
       A. Constantly.

  Q. As say, I think I am entitled to ask you this, but if I am
not, I am not, so far as your perception is concerned, do
you believe that McDonalds' attitudes and stated policies
in relation to animal welfare are sincere or not?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. The first page of this document has to do with buildings.
Can you just cast your eye over those nine audit items on
that page and there is one over the page, 10, at the top of
page 37 and then I will ask you a question.
       A. Yes.
