Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 02

                                          Friday, 3rd March 1995.

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Bowes is here. Before he continues, I have
done what your Lordship has asked. I have marked on the
proposed amendment -- I have used square brackets in red
because it is what your Lordship suggested -- the passages
to which I refer. I say no more about them at this stage.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The animal welfare one, I thought I had one
already. I see I have a fresh copy up here.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship asked for one without handwriting on
       it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I thought I had one. Weeks ago I thought
       I had one.

MR. RAMPTON: I think you did when Dr. Gomez Gonzalez ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In that case I was told to put it somewhere
and that is what I wanted to know.

MR. RAMPTON: There is no harm in having two. My Lord, yellow
XI tab 5 at the back of Mark Pattison's statement since it
       is his document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you. Do you mean yellow XI?

MR. RAMPTON: It is IX, my Lord, I am sorry.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Before I forget, when we talk about
scheduling on Monday, I would like some realistic estimate
of when we expect to finish all the evidence in the case,
really, because of my own movements in the future.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, of course.

                        MR. BOWES, recalled.
            Cross-examined by the Defendants, continued.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Good morning, Mr. Bowes.

  THE WITNESS: Good morning, sir.

MR. MORRIS: I think we finished with sows.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You dealt with the normal life-span of sows,
their slaughter age, nose rings, feed and what it
contained. You elicited an answer from Mr. Bowes to the
effect that antibiotics were not used in pig feed. Those
were the last topics. He said that penicillin was used if
there was a respiratory problem but antibiotics had not
been given to all the pigs since 1979 or 1980.

MS. STEEL: Thank you. (To the witness): The system for the
piglets after they are removed from their mothers, did you
say, is that the same for indoor as well as outdoor pigs?
       A. Good morning. No, it is not the same. I believe
I described when I was here last time that the outdoor
system, pigs are weaned into what we call "kennels" --
