Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 16

little bit of elaboration, but Ms. Steel is using the same
       figure of speech now.

MR. RAMPTON: In fact, I think I qualified it by using the word
       "anxiety".

THE WITNESS: Anything outside of our specifications would cause
       me anxiety.

MS. STEEL: So if it was beyond the specification for
       unsatisfactory or -----
       A. Can you be a bit more specific?

  Q. That is the McKey one actually, is it not? So, if it is
beyond 10,000,000, it would give you a shiver, the TVC?
       A. Yes, for meat -- can I qualify "give me a shiver"
because I am not comfortable with that expression? It does
       not mean -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, do not worry. Have you much more to do
on food poisoning as opposed to animal welfare?

MR. MORRIS: Yes, we have nearly finished that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Try to do that, then we will have our break
before you go on to animal welfare.

MR. MORRIS: You said about the lettuce that was washed with
chlorinated water by Howard Long International, Norfolk?
       A. Yes.

  Q. But you get also lettuces from abroad, do you not?
       A. Howard Long Process are the only processor we have.
They shred the lettuce, they wash the lettuce and they pack
the lettuce for us. They are our only supplier. They have
their own raw material suppliers, obviously.

  Q. Because you have specifications, do you not, to get
lettuces from other countries if they are not available
       here?
       A. Well, yes, lettuces are not grown in the UK the whole
year around, so at times, various time of the year, they
have to import their raw material, yes.

  Q. You have a specific lettuce that you are keen on, do you
       not?
       A. We only take iceberg lettuce, if that is what you are
       talking about.

  Q. Sometimes they are only available from Australia; is that
       correct?
       A. We have taken products from Australia, yes.

  Q. Lettuce, we are talking about iceberg lettuce -- I think it
was in an advert or something?
       A. Yes, we have taken some lettuce from Australia on a
trial, I believe, yes, but it is not a regular thing.

  Q. In 1988 you said it was a different supplier or were there
       two suppliers?
