Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 28
A. How do you mean "what is the extent"?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you put it in a more precise way? You
have done some reading on the subject?
A. Yes.

Q. You have observed what is going on at Midland Meat Packers?
A. Yes.

Q. No doubt, you have had conversations from time to time
where methods of slaughter may have cropped up?
A. Yes.

Q. For one reason or another?
A. Yes.

Q. You do not tend to be an expert in slaughtering methods, I
do not suppose?
A. No, I do not.

MS. STEEL: In terms of slaughtering what were you looking out
for?
A. Are we talking about Midland Meat Packers.

Q. Yes.
A. Well, the main things that I would look for would be --
during the actual slaughtering process?

Q. Yes.
A. Well, the effective stunning of the animal, to see that
the animal does not suffer, obviously, and the killing.
I also walk around the holding pens for the animals, and
then follow the process through actually. You follow it in
reverse because of the potential for cross-contamination,
so you start at the end of the line and go backwards.

Q. Are you the main person in the company responsible for
animal welfare?
A. No, I am not.

Q. Who is that person?
A. Barbara Crawford is really responsible in our
department for animal welfare issues.

Q. Are you next under her?
A. That is correct.

Q. Is there anyone else who is on your level or above you?
A. Well, Barbara Crawford is immediately above me. She is
my boss.

Q. Yes, apart from Barbara Crawford?
A. Then I am the next one down, if you like.

Q. You have not visited the slaughter facilities at Sun Valley
then?
A. Yes, many times.

Q. You have?
A. Yes.
