Day 128 - 24 May 95 - Page 06

  Q. So you could not tell us whether it was an hour, two hours,
       half a day?
       A. My understanding is it is a segment they have to go
through, and it is mostly based on the procedures, the
legal side, and what the Company has to do.

  Q. The legal side?
       A. The legal requirement.

  Q. Right. Are you saying that is the situation now for the
       IPM course?
       A. I believe the IPM course still includes health and
safety, yes, so our personnel people would still be going
through that training as they got their own qualifications.

  Q. But what you said about what people learn on the course,
that would have applied before you became Head of Health
       and Safety?
       A. Yes, that is correct.

  Q. I am not sure whether you said or not, but when in 1990 did
       you return from maternity leave?
       A. It was, well, I returned from maternity leave in
February 1990 and worked in Quality Assurance for a while
part-time. It was July 1990 that I started full-time again
in health and safety and hygiene.

  Q. Then in late 1990 you did this course?
       A. I started on it.

  Q. How long did that course take?
       A. I believe I took the exams in December 1991. They only
have exams twice a year, June and December.

  Q. So did the course start in December 1990?
       A. It was on open learning course, so I went through at my
own pace, although I had tutorial support from Portsmouth.

  Q. Sorry, did you have a predecessor?
       A. No.

  Q. Is that also the case for the food safety, the hygiene side
       of the things?
       A. Yes, the food safety side still involves QA a lot,
Quality Assurance, and certainly then my role in Quality
       Assurance involved food safety.

  Q. But there was not any similar position of ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- Head of Food Safety or whatever?
       A. Well, I would not say I was Head of Food Safety. My
role was just very much to see if there was anything new we
could learn from the Food Safety Act and learn about due
diligence. As I explained yesterday, really that role in
food safety has come and gone over the five years. There
have been times when my role has just been purely health
       and safety.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think what you are being asked is, if you
