Day 136 - 16 Jun 95 - Page 06
MR. RAMPTON: Can we see that one first then; let us try to do
it chronologically?
A. There are two of them.

Q. There are two of them?
A. Yes.

Q. That is similar to the tile that was used at Epsom in 1988?
A. Yes, this one is made by the same company.

Q. The company is which?
A. Pilkington.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you hold the top side up? Can you hold
it so that the top side is -- that is the top side, is it?
A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: That is the side people walk on?
A. That is right.

Q. It is hatched?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The same with this ---
A. The same with this one.

Q. -- one?
A. Which also has the hatched and pimples on the surface.

MR. RAMPTON: Because it would be useful to have it recorded,
can you give us a rough idea of how deep the grooves are on
those Pilkington type tiles?
A. They are approximately between two and three
millimetres.

Q. Mr. Riley, could you now pass those to the Defendants?

MR. MORRIS: Can you clarify whether the pimples were two to
three millimetres or the tiles?

MR. RAMPTON: The grooves is what I asked about.
A. The tiles are invariably between seven and nine
millimetres thick.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will have a look. I mean, from a distance
it did not look to me as if it would be quite two or three
millimetres. Is that an actual measurement or just looking
at it as a guess?
A. Just looking at it as a guess, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Are they ceramic?
A. They are ceramic.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I say I would have thought it was about a
millimetre, but there we are. You are just looking at it
in order to make an estimate?
A. I did say between two and three. I know that somewhere
it has actually been about three or even four.

Q. Yes.
