Day 145 - 29 Jun 95 - Page 14

  Q. Was that the first time it had gone up?
       A. No, it has progressively gone up over the years.

  Q. About how often does it go up?
       A. Oh, boy! I do not think there is any specific thing
that dictates that. You take into consideration a lot of
different things and I do not think there is a set format
when you change that -- at least, I have never had a set
       format.

  Q. Just to check on something, if you turn to tab 2, page 68.
I did ask you but it has it written down so it might be
better. "Performance guidelines". This is the English
Crew Handbook. If you look at those English performance
guidelines, are they the same as the USA?
       A. Yes, they are the same as the US.

  Q. Why do you have a maximum pay re. performance? Cannot
       people perform any better?
       A. The reason is that you have to have some structure
within the organisation when you have different positions.
I think we have talked about the fact that you have got
crew and crew trainers and crew chiefs and so on up, so you
have to have some manner in which to keep consistency among
       different levels.

  Q. So that is status related pay, then?
       A. It is responsibility related pay.

  Q. Yes, status related?
       A. My Lord, I do not know if there is a difference between
        ---

  Q. Depending -----
       A. -- English/English or American/English.

  Q. Depending on the name of your position.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think there is. Ms. Steel and you
are just viewing it from different aspects. She would like
you to agree that pay is related to status. You say it is
related to responsibility. In fact, the higher your
status, no doubt, the greater your responsibility. So the
two, to some extent, go hand in glove.

MS. STEEL: The higher your named position within the Company,
       the higher your pay?
       A. It really depends upon job responsibilities. That is
       really what it depends upon.

  Q. So sometimes the Junior Vice Presidents get paid more than
       Senior Vice Presidents?
       A. What is a Junior Vice President?

  Q. All right, just Assistant Vice President then?
       A. No, I do not think that would occur.

  Q. Sometimes Managers get more than Assistant Vice Presidents?
       A. No, that would not -- excuse me, you mean store
