Day 145 - 29 Jun 95 - Page 15

       managers?

  Q. Yes.
       A. No.

  Q. So, effectively, the higher your named position within the
       Company, the higher your pay?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you disagree with what I have just said?
If you are saying that it is not right that the higher your
status, the higher your responsibility, put that,
       I suggest, to Mr. Stein.

MS. STEEL: I do not accept that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, then put it to him because at the moment
       that is Mr. Stein's view.

MS. STEEL: Yes, but I am just asking whether the higher your
named position within the Company -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: His answer is "yes" because the higher your
responsibility is, the higher your status.

MS. STEEL: That is his view. I just wanted an answer to a
       simple question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you have some reason for challenging that,
you do not have to take the opportunity, I am inviting you
to take the opportunity to put it.

MS. STEEL: The crew have responsibilities, do they not? They
have to make sure that they keep the place hygienic and
       things likes that?
       A. There is no question about it; they have a very
important job and are treated equitably and fairly in the
       light of that.

  Q. You would consider it too expensive to take crew on at $10
an hour, would you not, is that fair to say?
       A. If the question is -- I think I have articulated before
-- that we would do our wage surveys, we would aim for the
upper end of those scales, and whatever that would
indicate, and based upon the experience of the individual,
would be what we would pay.

  Q. Would the Company be interested in taking on crew at $10 an
       hour?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I really do protest at this line. It
really is the logic and the language Alice in Wonderland we
have had for the last 10 minutes. Ms. Steel knows
perfectly well that this is a commercial company that pays
the wages that they think will attract people of the right
quality. Of course, it could pay the workers $100 an hour
if it wanted and it would go out of business.

MS. STEEL: Yes. I think it is quite a simple question and he
can answer it with one word.
