Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 21

Q. In your view how long, or in your experience, I should say,
how long does it take -- take an example, an 18 year old,
19 year old college student who has never done a kitchen
job or worked at a till before, first job, comes to
McDonald's as a part-timer maybe during the college
vacation, how long do you think, and assuming they are
reasonably intelligent, not completely cac-handed, how long
in your view, roughly speaking, does it take to get them
efficient at all the things they have to do?
A. All the things?

Q. Yes, all the things before you have your ideal crew member?
A. Eight to nine months.

Q. How much time, how much management time or training squad
time, staffed time, if you like, is given over to training
a new crew member?
A. Initially, they would have some sort of training plan
where they would work one area accompanied with one of
these training squad for, say, two to three days, then they
would have observation check lists carried out. They would
not move on to another area until they passed these
observation check lists. If there was a problem that they
failed the observation check lists, then they would be
retrained, or corrective coaching would take place until
they did pass.

Q. Is the system of stars in any way related to these
observation check lists and the moving from one position to
another?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. I do not know that we have had this yet in the court.
I would like you, if you will, to explain exactly how the
star system worked or worked in those days anyway.
A. OK. Once a crew member, for example, has been trained
on fries, they would have one observation check list
carried out on them by one Manager, or training squad.
Then they would have another one carried out by a different
Manager or training squad. Both had to be passes. This
would then qualify them to take the test, the unit test.
Once they have passed the test, they then would have to
have another two observation check lists completed after
the test by two different Managers as well. That is when
they would be qualified for that particular area.

Q. Then they get a star?
A. That is right.

Q. How many stars in all are available?
A. Five.

Q. Are the stars directly related in any way to the rate of
pay?
A. In some instances, yes, because there are scenarios
where you will get someone that is fully trained, working
very, very hard, you know, maybe has been there a year and
they have really excelled themselves, and you can use that
as an additional tool for motivation.
