Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 26

       A. Not so much working conditions, not very often the
       working conditions.

  Q. What about their pay, would they complain about that?
       A. Yes -- I think you get that in all jobs.

  Q. Which sort of things would they say?
       A. Just generally that, you know, they are not getting
       paid enough.

  Q. No. Did they ever complain about their Managers?
       A. Sometimes, yes.

  Q. Did you, as the person that held the rap sessions, ever
tell any Manager what any individual crew member had said
       about that Manager?
       A. No.

  Q. One particular question about safety: What was the
position in relation to repair of electrical equipment when
you were Manager at Seven Sisters?
       A. First of all, the management, the salaried management
team, had to under go an Advanced Equipment Course. Anyone
that had passed that Advanced Equipment Course could tamper
with bits of, say, toasters or fryers etc. etc., and if
they could not repair it themselves, then an engineer would
       be called in.

  Q. What about what many people would regard as a relatively
simple thing like changing a plug or a light bulb?
       A. In those days, yes, we would do that -- obviously, now
       we cannot.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you just pause for a moment?

MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask you one further question which I forgot
to ask about the rap sessions, Mr. Giardina? Did anybody
at any rap session you ever attended, whether as crew
member or as Area Supervisor, ever say anything about trade
       unions?
       A. No.

  Q. What, nobody ever said: "We think the conditions in this
hellish place are so dreadful that we really do need the
       protection of a union"?
       A. No -- never.

  Q. How many rap sessions do you think you conducted during the
six or seven years that you were an Area Supervisor?
       A. I would say about 50.

  Q. All in Central or East London -- at this time I think it
       was a bit further east?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can I ask you about two related things, Mr. Giardina,
before we come on to some specific Magee allegations -- and
only two of those? Two related questions, labour costs and
turnover. First of all, can I ask you, can you remember
what your turnover was, say, in staff I mean, in 1987?
