Day 162 - 25 Jul 95 - Page 08

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I see.

MS. STEEL: So they would have to account for the burgers that
       they threw away, anyway?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that on a sheet at the time when they are working, or is
       that afterwards?
       A. Afterwards. It is just a red bin, and they throw it in
the red bin to be counted.

  Q. But when the burgers are put on the buns, there is a tray
of buns laid out, is there not, with a first layer of
whatever it is that goes on there, and then they put the
actual patty on top of that?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. So if they broke a couple of patties, then the tray would
       be two patties short?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And it is going to disrupt production, and they might well
get shouted at: "Hey, what is going on here"?
       A. They would not be shouted. That is just not the
Strand. They would not be shouted. They would be asked to
continue producing more, so that the production can
continuously keep up. Shouting does not take us anywhere,
       and so we know that.

  Q. So they would just take the already made-up buns off the
tray and pass the completed ones down the line?
       A. Yes. They could do that, and, if they do not have
time, they can just put it aside and wrap, and the
Production Manager will throw it away.

  Q. If they started breaking more than one burger every three
to four hours, they would be taken on one side and told
that they had to be more careful, would they not?
       A. That is not true.

  Q. They would not be?
       A. They would not. Mistakes do happen, and the boys and
the girls are working hard. That is expected.

  Q. So it would not surprise you if more than one burger every
three or four hours got broken?
       A. No.

  Q. It would not?
       A. It would not.

  Q. Is there any level where you would take some kind of
       action?
       A. I did not get to that stage at all when I was working.

MR. MORRIS: Just one further question on that last point, just
to clarify: if every three or four hours someone breaks a
patty, can they just chuck it in a waste bin themselves, or
do they have to tell someone that they are doing that?
