Day 162 - 25 Jul 95 - Page 12

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think that is an allegation, that
the makers of the film -- I mean, if one has ever been at a
meeting oneself which is being filmed, you know that some
people who quite often have a lot to say think that now is
the moment to keep quiet, since the cameras are there, and
others who do not say very much suddenly find they have
considerable acting abilities. So I am not making any
suggestion which goes beyond one's own experience.

MS. STEEL: No. But, I mean, I would say that in any meeting
there are always some people that talk and others do not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, obviously so.

MS. STEEL: When the filming was going to take place, did you
get instructions from Head Office about how to deal with
       the camera crews and -----
       A. No.

  Q. You did not get any instructions from them?
       A. Well, we were told that there will be people coming in
to film and we have to just run our business, and they want
to record how the store is running.

  Q. They told you when they were coming, though?
       A. Oh, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could I just ask, I have assumed it was all
done by a hand or shoulder held video ---
       A. That is correct.

  Q. -- filming?
       A. That is correct, sir.

MR. MORRIS: You were talking about students -- this was
yesterday -- some of the crew would be students coming back
to work at the store, and you said if someone goes away for
less than two or three months or so, they would be kept on
the payroll and then they would have their job back; and,
presumably, they would have all their conditions of
       service, would they, as well?
       A. Yes.

  Q. But would that apply to, say, a student that had gone off
on a term somewhere and come back for a holiday period and
said, "I am available again for the Strand now, because
I went to Glasgow to college and now I am back"?
       A. No, it does not. Once they are terminated from the
payroll, when they are re-hired, they will be starting.
From time to time, we negotiate their starting rate, but
the other conditions would be as a starter.

  Q. What, they would lose all their stars, and things like
       that?
       A. Sure. They know that they lose their stars.

  Q. But if someone, say -- obviously, students have fixed term
       times -----
