Day 173 - 16 Oct 95 - Page 15

  Q. OK. We have heard something to the effect that the ratio
in the UK is 20 full-timers to 80 part-timers, something
like that, 20 per cent to 80 per cent. Was that right?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have actually had varying -- that has been
one, and another has been 70/30.

MR. MORRIS: I think the national figures, though, were said to
       be 20 to 80.

(To the witness) But do you happen to know what roughly
the figures -- would it have been roughly the same as the
       UK at the time?
       A. Sorry, is your question relating to this particular
       time?

  Q. 1979.
       A. Right. Obviously, it is a long time ago, so I cannot
recall, but I would say it probably was more than that.
I would say possibly 30 per cent.

  Q. 30/70, maybe, something like that?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is in 1979?
       A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Does that apply to the total employment in the
Company, that something like 30/70, or just the crew?
       A. Just the restaurant management and the crew.

  Q. So that would be the total in-store employees, including
management, the breakdown would be something like 30/70?
I think you can put close that up for the moment. Thank
you. It is probably better to close it and leave it on the
side. We will probably come back to it later.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there any significance to you in just how
many people were working for the Company, because
I remember what Mr. Mehigan says in his statement about the
       number of people?

MR. MORRIS: Yes. I think we will come back to that later.

MS. STEEL: Does the Wages Council in Ireland -- that is
correct, is it not? You have mentioned it in your
       statement.
       A. Yes, there is the JLC.

  Q. They set pay rates?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is that?
       A. Sorry, my Lord. It is the Joint Labour Committee.

MS. STEEL: They set pay rates, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do they do that on an annual basis or on some other basis?
       A. They do it annually; they review rates annually.
