Day 173 - 16 Oct 95 - Page 16
Q. Is there a set time of year when that happens?
A. Yes; it is approximately August/September.

Q. Would that have been the same in 1979, or has it changed?
A. I think the date may have changed, but I cannot be
certain of that.

Q. Do you know what the month was, then, in 1979?
A. No.

Q. You do not remember at all?
A. No.

Q. Do you remember what season it was, even?
A. No, because the JLC is for all of the country, with the
exception of the city.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would it apply to your restaurants, then, in
1979?
A. No, no.

MS. STEEL: Was there any wage protection in Dublin?
A. In 1979?

Q. Yes.
A. No, there was not.

Q. There was none at all?
A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why is that? Was that because wages tended
to be higher in Dublin than out in the country anyway, or
was there some other reason; do you know?
A. Well, to my knowledge, the wages were probably lower
outside of Dublin, and the JLC was created to correct
that. That is to my knowledge.

MS. STEEL: Apart from when the Wages Council -- the JLC, sorry
-- sets new rates, does the Company have a set time when
it increases the wages of crew?
A. Yes, we do.

Q. When is that?
A. Are you talking currently?

Q. If you could tell us both, it is probably the easiest
thing. Tell us when it changed, if there was any change?
A. Sorry, currently or 1979?

Q. Can you tell us both? Can you tell us -----

MR. RAMPTON: I am a little bit concerned about this.
Mr. Mehigan is down for two days, I know, but I do question
somewhat the relevance of current conditions. We are
concerned in this witness's case with specific events in
two specific years: 1979 and 1985. I wonder what value it
really has to explore what the current position is. It may
be very interesting and all that kind of thing, but I do
wonder what value it has.
