Day 182 - 02 Nov 95 - Page 15
they were probably very afraid of letting anyone know.

But what he is on about with the security risk, I am not
quite sure. He might be afraid that his employees will
steal the money or that there will be break-ins during the
night. I am not sure what that is about.

But the meeting that was held on the 16th was after the
HRAF had given the demand for a collective agreement; and
-- well, as it happened, the agreement which McDonald's,
just days later, made with these closers was that they were
given a pay increase of, I believe, 40 per cent. So
I cannot understand why he would give a pay increase of
40 per cent if he was trying to reduce labour costs. It
does not quite make sense to me.

MR. MORRIS: Did he still purchase the dishwashers?
A. Yes, the dishwashers were installed in all the
stores -- well, at least in my store where I work. But the
closers still work the normal hours, although at better
pay.

Q. When you say the closers still work the normal hours, that
is even today?
A. Yes.

Q. Yes. What happened to their notices of dismissal?
A. Well, they were called back immediately when that was
part of the agreement reached between the closers and
McDonald's that they would continue working. That is one
of the papers you have got, but it is in Norwegian.

Q. Yes. We will just go through the relevant letters. Letter
number 1, can you just say what that shows?
A. I have not got that letter, I am afraid.

MR. MORRIS: I am sorry.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you look in the bundle -- sorry. Can you
get a pale blue bundle III which is behind you, at the very
top, on the right? If you look in there at divider 15, you
should find your statement and, behind it, a letter dated
17th August 1993.
A. Yes. The one I am talking about the agreement is the
one dated 6th September.

Q. Can you keep your voice up, please, Mr. Jenssen?
A. I am sorry. It is the one dated 6th September 1993.

MR. MORRIS: That is number 4. OK.
A. Yes.

Q. The first letter, if you just say in your own words what
the sting of that letter is; the first one, which is the
one that is signed by Stephen Suttie, 17th August 1993?
A. That is a protocol of the meeting between the three
supervisors and the closers, where they are informed that
washing machines will be purchased and that they will be
given a one month dismissal.
