Day 197 - 07 Dec 95 - Page 15
A. It was round about this, just after this PR, in fact,
I think it was the January or February of 90, I was given
an all expenses paid holiday for me and my wife to
Portugal, including spending money for my performance as
Manager, for the recognition.

Q. Who gave you that or who would have authorised that?
A. Tim Taylor authorised that holiday.

Q. On 51 under "Overall", it says: "Until the last four or
five months, Colchester store has always been rated as a
solid B operations store. Now its reputation has slipped
quite considerably, visits have not been good". Is that
the results of inspections?
A. Yes, I mean, that relates to where we were talking
about before with regards to spending a lot of labour one
day and not another day.

Q. "The full field was not good, turnover up, lack of
progress of assistants. One saving grace has been the
consistent PAC. You have developed a good knowledge of
the profit and loss side of the business. Well done".
What are they saying there?
A. I mean, basically, although I was having problems in
some areas of the store, because I was producing figures,
I was being told, well, not that was OK not to do well in
the other areas, but well done for producing the figures.

Q. Achieving the profit?
A. The profit side of things.

Q. It says: "Colchester has always been rated as a solid B
operation store". Was there any time when under Mark
Davis or under yourself that you were ever not rated as a
B operation store?
A. To my knowledge, we were always a B store. There
might within some full field grade we got possibly a "C"
in one area but, overall, I do not think we were ever
rated less than a B.

Q. Overall, because that is an overall comment there, do you
feel that the running of the store overall changed much
between the day that you became a salaried Manager and the
day that you left?
A. There was a slight change in the fact that under Mark
Davies as a Manager, the store got Store of the Year
and was running at As; under me, it maintained a B. I was
unable to get it to an A standard. But ------

Q. But previous to Store of the Year, was it generally
getting Bs under Mark Davies? I cannot remember now.
A. At that stage, I cannot remember exactly what we were
running at, but, I mean, it was As, Bs, that type of grade
we were achieving.

Q. It says at page 51 in the middle of the page, the
paragraph starting: "Cleanliness varies. The store has
always been able to do an 'all nighter' and get the store
to a solid B". Do you have any comment on that? It says
"always been able to do an 'all nighter'"?
