Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 15

  MR. MORRIS: It says:

"Unsatisfactory does not mean that it is condemnable. It
means it is unsatisfactory. It does not mean that it is
       bad or smelling or off."

The point is that this particular so-called quality control
check is one of the 36 in your pamphlet about bacterial
contamination of raw meat supplies, and there are 3
categories, satisfactory, passable, unsatisfactory, and all
the meat is used unless it is smells or looks off. Do you
accept that this fact sheet is a lie, you are misleading
       the customers?
       A. I do not accept that.

  Q. You can put that file away. Thank you very much.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you help, Mr. Riley?

  MR. MORRIS: Now ----

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry, this is awful for me to have to keep
jumping up but the press are here and Mr. Morris is making
use of that opportunity, I have absolutely no doubt. It is
       essential ----

MS. STEEL: Mr. Rampton can come back in re-examination.

MR. RAMPTON: That is not right, because what Mr. Morris is
doing is wholly improper. I will read out, if I may, what
       Mr. Walker actually said.

This is at line 28, and this is why I make the objection
I do of page 38 of that day. Mr. Morris, I think it was,
or it might have been Ms. Steel:

"Can I ask if the meat is rejected as unsatisfactory? Does
it get sent back to the suppliers or is it just thrown away
       or what?

Mr. Walker: No, you have to -- unsatisfactory does not
mean it is condemnable. It means it is unsatisfactory.

       Question: For what?

Answer: Well, as a standard it is unsatisfactory. It does
not mean that it is bad or smelling or off. It just means
it is unsatisfactory by McDonald's standards.

Question: So what happens to it?"

My Lord, this is the bit that Mr. Morris was unwilling to
       read:

"Answer: As I said, I think it in my evidence yesterday,
we publish a league table and if someone is bottom of that
table twice and they cannot correct the situation, they are
       taken off our supply list."

MS. STEEL: And then at the bottom:
