Day 248 - 13 May 96 - Page 04

Kingdom. We imported French fries and we never imported
beef, we always had our beef products produced here. My
first job coming to the UK was not as purchasing director,
it was an operations function, I had ancillary purchasing
duties to do, so I do not know how much attention the man
paid to what I said to him, but I certainly did not say all
       of that.

  Q. Right. I think we have heard evidence that at some stage
you were importing beef from America, but... The raw
material that is, not the ----
       A. No, that is not the case, certainly not then.

  Q. I take it you would assume David Walker knows where he gets
       his beef from?
       A. David Walker was not involved with the Company in 1974.

  Q. But from the time when he got involved onwards, he would
know what he was talking about in terms of the ----
       A. I think he probably, from the time he got involved,
would know exactly where we had gone, yes.

  Q. OK. In the first column you are quoted about the Woolwich
store being lonely in those first few days, and stuff about
children being welcome in the restaurants, and then it goes
on to say, "McDonald's team just arrived from America
realised that they had to change the nation's eating
habits". Is that something you would agree with?
       A. I think that is true, yes.

  Q. Right. Then if you can turn to the third page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think I kept a copy of this in my room.
When I say 'a copy', I think I kept the supplement itself
but I do not have one with me, so...

MR. RAMPTON: I have a black and white one, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I hesitate to take that away from her.

MR. RAMPTON: I have written on it now, unfortunately.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All I ask is, identify where they are, I will
make a note, and I would like someone to provide me with a
photocopy in due course which I can mark up. Keep going
       now.

MS. STEEL: OK. On the third page, there is an article under a
picture of ronald mcdonald's. Is that in a restaurant,
       that photograph, do you know?
       A. I think so.

  Q. And it is entitled "McDonald's as it is taught, company
interest in the community, includes education and sport."
If you can read that article. (Pause).
       A. I have read it.

  Q. Is there anything in there you think is incorrect?
       A. No, I think it is accurate. I am not sure of some of
the numerical stuff, the 'worth one million' or '20,000
