Day 251 - 17 May 96 - Page 02

                                           Friday, 17th May 1996.

MR. MORRIS: If I can just have a couple of minutes to organise
       my pens? (Pause).

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is this something I should look at?

MS. STEEL: You could have a look at it.

MR. MORRIS: That one today, yes, Miss Branford will be asked
about it, if it is okay.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will read Miss Branford's note. Yes, I
will put that behind Miss Branford's statement. Some of
the names of towns or areas have not come through
particularly clearly, but you can help me about that if it
       is important.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, all I would say at the moment about that
-- it has just been handed to me -- is that I do not
accept presently that it is admissible evidence; one
principal reason for that is that it is in Portuguese,
quite apart from the fact, obviously, that I have not had a
       chance to read it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will put it there and hear any discussion
or argument about it in due course.

MR. MORRIS: Shall we call our witness?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, would you like to come into the witness
       box, please, Miss Branford?

                        SUSAN EDITH BRANFORD, sworn
                          Examined by MR. MORRIS

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If at any stage you want to sit down,
Miss Branford, pull the chair forward so you sit in the
       front of the witness box.
       A. Okay, fine.

MR. MORRIS: Can you give the court your full name?
       A. Susan Edith Branford.

  Q. Could you give the court your address?
       A. Here in London, yes -- [address removed]

  Q. Could you give the court your current position?
       A. I currently work as a Latin American specialist,
particularly a Brazil specialist, at the World Service of
       the BBC.

  Q. How long have you been in that position?
       A. I have been in that position since 1987.

  Q. You have said in your statement that you are a Brazil
specialist; what exactly have you specialised in, the
expertise, your area of expertise, regarding Brazil that is
       relevant to this case?
       A. Well, for the last 30 years, the whole of my
