Day 251 - 17 May 96 - Page 17

  Q. Take it very slowly so that it goes straight down.
       A. "Here is the survey of areas in conflict in the
municipalities that supplies meat to McDonald's. The
research was done taking all the areas in these
localities". That means in these municipalities, it is
rather a funny sentence of Portuguese, actually.

  Q. Do not worry, do your best at the moment.
       A. "Independently of the fact, not taking into
consideration, whether or not these conflicts still
continue. This was due to lack of time. For this reason,
many of these conflicts, many of them can be old conflicts
that have now ended. We have included conflicts over land
and conflicts over labour conditions". That means with
workers' conflicts over land and conflicts with the
workers. "Also, we do not have in our documentation the
names of the companies for whom these ranches supply
meat". So, they are saying that they are giving us a list
of the ranches where there have been conflicts but they do
not know, they have not got a list, of the meat packing
stations, the slaughter houses, which were supplied with
cattle from these ranches, they just have the names of the
ranches where there have been conflicts. We hope, all the
same, that this can be useful, Yours faithfully".

  MR. MORRIS: And the name?
       A. Inez. Like I said, it is a bad photocopy here, it
       looks like E-H-N-E-H-N-E.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I invite your Lordship to look at the last
page where the full name is set out?
       A. Yes, I think so. It is Inez Estone, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is why I thought it was a woman?
       A. Yes, I think it is a woman, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Is this the Pastoral Land Commission as far as you
       know it?
       A. She says... I cannot actually read... The national
secretariat of the... which is the Pastoral Land
Commission, but I do not know what that first... I think
she just means from the national secretariat of the
Pastoral Land Commission. But, I mean, I do not know her.
I just asked them to have a look in their files, and this
is the response they came up with.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you going to go next, Mr. Morris,
       with this documentation?

MR. MORRIS: I think that is the end of that documentation.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, except it might help me. For instance,
I spent a bit of time yesterday looking at the list in
Senior Morganti's recent statement and I have drawn pencil
circles around I think about 25 towns which I saw.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, can I say this, I think it will save
time. I do not believe the witness needs to go through
this, the two things can be put together at a later stage.
I have only done one, I have only had time to do one. I
