Day 256 - 04 Jun 96 - Page 15

       A. Yes, I do. I am sorry.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: For future reference, I put that right at the
back of H3, which is my Professor Campbell section.

MR. MORRIS: Right. I will read this through. I am not going
to read the two paragraphs at the bottom of the first page
about public recognition, and I was not going to read the
paragraphs on the third page under "more speculative
ideas". I will read the rest.

"Some snippets of information from the China Project.
Background. This is the most comprehensive project on diet
and disease ever undertaken. Two major surveys were
undertaken: 1983 and 1989 to 90. These surveys were
undertaken in China, because cancers and various other
       diseases exhibit exceptional geographic localisation.
Thus, it made sense to examine these local regions to
determine the responsible dietary and lifestyle factors.
In a 1983 survey, 367 items of information were collected
on how people live and how they die in 138 rural Chinese
villages. 6,500 adults and their families were surveyed."

Can I just ask a question on that, actually? Do you know
anything about the total numbers of people, if it was 6,500
       families?
       A. Approximately 20,000 total.

  Q. Right.

"In a 1989/90 survey, more than 1,000 items of information
were collected in 170 villages in rural China and Taiwan,
involving 10,200 adults and their families."

Was there a total figure for the number of people in that
       one?
       A. Yes. You can multiply it by approximately four.

  Q. So, something like 40,000 individuals?
       A. Yes. There is one correction there, incidentally,
I just saw. The 1,000 items of information was our
estimate of what we were going to eventually acquire; and
we are just about done with the survey now, and the better
estimate is closer to 700 items of information.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So I should put "about 700", should I?
       A. Yes.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: Is that 700 items of information from each
       individual?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right. Continuing to read:

"These new data, including a large number of socioeconomic
characteristics, will be combined with a new survey on
