Day 256 - 04 Jun 96 - Page 14

definitely raises risk, particularly of course for those
individuals who are most vulnerable, as I pointed out
before. So, there is definite risk there for doing that,
to say nothing of the fact that using such food, even
rather modestly like that, tends to encourage people to, if
you will, consume still more as time passes.

MR. MORRIS: OK. In your opinion, does an individual meal have
any physical effect on the body?
       A. Yes. There is evidence -- and I think some of this is
fairly common knowledge, as I go by experience -- there is
evidence that diets high in fat and high in animal protein,
in particular, cause an individual to feel rather
sluggish. I mean, as I say, I think this is fairly common
       knowledge. But -----

  Q. Is that referring to an individual meal or -----
       A. Yes, an individual meal, exactly. But now we are
getting some individual -- getting some rather impressive
data to show that, when such occurs, an individual, if then
given the choice, let us say, physical activity, they in
fact will tend to have -- or would simply be less desirous
       of such activity.

  Q. After eating a high fat/low fibre meal?
       A. Right. There is some really impressive experimental
animal data on this, where the animal, I presume, is not
thinking about what kind of meal they are consuming, and it
turns out that if one decreases the intake of animal
protein in, let us say, a rodent diet, and then gives the
rodents an opportunity to get into one of these so-called
exercise wheels voluntarily, it turns out that the animals
that are consuming less animal protein as part of their
diet exercise far more. So, the conclusion there --
I think the reasonable conclusion -- is that it is one of
the responses that tends to occur in these kinds of diets.

  Q. Does it have any effect on the blood in any way, an
       individual high fat/low fibre meal?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where does this come into what I have got
notice of in Professor Campbell's evidence?

MS. STEEL: It is something that has been bought up by
       Mr. Rampton.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but where do I have notice that
Professor Campbell is going to tell me about all this?

MR. MORRIS: OK. I will move on, then.

(To the witness) If we move onto the snippets of
information from the China Project, a summary -- do you
       have a copy of that?
       A. I am sorry, I do not, actually.

  Q. It should be there somewhere. It is a four or five-page
       document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you had it loose.
