Day 261 - 12 Jun 96 - Page 08

       all in the same envelope.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, very well.

MR. RAMPTON: They were served together.

MS. STEEL: (To the witness) Then, going on from what I just
read, after you were talking to Jonathan about the writs
and asking him about them, you go on to say:

"I had the distinct feeling that a certain amount of
'closing ranks' was going on, as he is usually quite
chatty. Altogether, I felt from Helen Steel's and
Jonathan's reactions that the event had been received not
with their usual 'couldn't care less' attitude."

That was your impression, was it?
       A. That was my impression, yes.

  Q. What did you write about after that?
       A. I cannot remember.

  Q. Was it something to do with ---
       A. I cannot remember.

  Q. -- what was said about the writs?
       A. I cannot remember. I cannot help you, I am afraid.

  Q. How many questions did you ask Jonathan about the writs?
       A. As far as I know, I did not ask specific questions.
I just said to him, "What is going on", or words to that
       effect.

  Q. So, your impression that there was a certain closing of
ranks was based on just one question, was it?
       A. It was based on the -- no one wanted particularly to
talk about it when, normally, they were quite chatty and
open. So, obviously, the event had affected them in some
       way or another.

  Q. Or, as you say, there was a closing of ranks and they were
       suspicious of you?
       A. I did not specifically think that, no. I just had the
impression that people were not going to talk about
       anything.

  Q. Just to read out the first bit:

"I arrived at 6 Endsleigh Street at 19.30 hours to find
Shelley and three non-London Greenpeace people present. No
one else turned up until just before 20.00 hours, when
Jonathan, his girlfriend Heather and Helen Steel arrived,
       followed shortly after by Charlie."

That is all correct, in terms of who was at the meeting, is
       it?
       A. As far as I can recall, yes.

  Q. So there were at least two agents there from Kings?
       A. It would appear so, yes.
