Day 268 - 24 Jun 96 - Page 03

       A. That is what it appears to be from my notes, yes.

  Q. It looks as though there was quite a discussion about
something else, as you go on to two pages for that date, so
it was not that there was not a meeting on that occasion?
       A. I do not recall. It could have been observations. It
could have been notes on the meeting. I do not recall what
       that said.

  Q. Well, would it have been notes of anything else?
       A. It could have been notes on information that I gleaned
concerning members of the group or McDonald's. I really do
       not know.

  Q. Well, if it has been about McDonald's -- well, we have got
McDonald's word -- well, we have got Mr. Rampton's word for
it that it would not have been blanked out.
       A. Perhaps it was about members of the group. I do not
       recall.

  Q. OK. If we go on to 14th June.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 139.
       A. Thank you, sir.

MS. STEEL: I am just trying to find where it is in your
statement. It is actually the second statement it is in,
not the third one, on the third page. If you just read
through the notes. It is 14th June. "Caledonian Road,
Paul, Helen, Jonathan, Paul, Old Bill, and a new bloke
present. Jane turned up later. Meeting dead. Nothing
important. A couple of letters read regarding McDonald's.
Asking for info, only individuals." Do you know whether
       you took those letters?
       A. I do not recall.

  Q. "Meeting finished reasonably early 9.30 because Paul and
Helen are going for a drink with friends." Do you know
       when you made these notes?
       A. It would have been after the meeting.

  Q. The same kind of time span as you usually made them?
       A. More than likely, yes, they would be.

  Q. More than likely?
       A. Well, I do not recall exactly but they would have been
taken as soon as possible after the meeting.

  Q. Were you particularly slap dash on this occasion or was it
your usual standard of making notes afterwards?
       A. No, it was my usual standard of making notes.

  Q. I was not at this meeting, Mr. Claire. So you said that
there was no other Helen in the group. How do you explain
that you have got me down at this meeting?
       A. From looking at my notes, you were there.

  Q. So if it turns out that I was not there, your notes must be
       completely unreliable?
       A. Not at all. If it turns out you were not there, well
