Day 268 - 24 Jun 96 - Page 11

       A. No, I did not.

  Q. You can remember that bit clearly, can you?
       A. I would not have done something like that.

  Q. It is all right to do it to the Greenpeace office but it is
not all right to do it to people's houses?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not both to answer that question.

MS. STEEL: Well, I am entitled to ask --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. He said he slipped the lock of
Greenpeace. For better or worse, he said he slipped the
lock of other addresses. You do not need to ask him if one
is right and the other is wrong. You can address me about
whether it was wrong to slip the London Greenpeace office
lock, if you think it will help you to suggest that it was
all sinister and to do with bugging and they have not
disclosed tapes of the bugs or anything of that kind.

MS. STEEL: No, but it is a question of whether he is telling
the truth about whether he slipped the locks of getting
into people's houses as well. I am entitled to ask about
       that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He said he did not.

MS. STEEL: I am entitled to test it though.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You put to him what happened then if he did
slip it, any information you have about slipping other
       people's locks.

MS. STEEL: I do not have to have information. I am entitled to
       test the evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just observe my ruling, please. Carry on.

MS. STEEL: I have got to say, you know, we have guaranteed to
       finish by 1.00 o'clock.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That does not matter. You ask questions
which I rule are relevant, and if you then observe my
ruling, which you must do, whether it is right or wrong you
must do, then we will finish even earlier.

MS. STEEL: But the point is --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Look, if you carry on arguing, I will tell
you to sit down and complete your cross-examination. I am
the Judge, you at this moment are advocate and you must
       observe my ruling.

MS. STEEL: Right, but can I just say that I did not get a
chance to put why it would be relevant, and it would be
relevant because if they got into the house and took some
documentation away or anything like that, then there might
       be other relevant information --
