Day 278 - 11 Jul 96 - Page 06
table of companies with cattle ranching interests in
tropical Latin America, and McDonald's is on that chart.
So I remember reading that at the time.

Q. Yes, but look at what it says, please. There is nothing
about cattle ranching does it?
A. It says "companies with cattle ranching interests in
tropical Latin America".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you looking now?
A. At the top of the chart on page 62 which goes over on
to page 63.

MR. RAMPTON: But look at the entry against McDonald's, Miss
Steel?
A. The entry may say "hamburger franchises", but the point
is the title of the chart is "Companies with cattle
ranching interests in tropical Latin America", so if
somebody writes a book saying that McDonald's have cattle
ranching interests in tropical Latin America who am I to
start questioning it?

Q. Miss Steel, it does not say that. Where a company has got
a ranching interest; the chart says so, does it not?
A. Well, what is the point in putting them in a chart
about companies with cattle ranching interests in tropical
Latin America if they don't have any interests in it?

Q. Very well. Do you want to look at pages 94 and 895?
A. I don't mind going on to pages 94 and 95, but I just
found that page which is the one that I remembered
(pause). Yes.

Q. As I put to you earlier, that effectively exonerates
McDonald's from importing Central American beef into the
United States does it not?
A. Well, I do not think it does. It obviously clearly
says that McDonald's are denying any involvement but it has
got about, "US scientists who worked extensively in the
tropical forest areas of middle America have reported that
in November 1979 the production engineer of Industria De
Ganadios, Squatemalsacol SA, a beef packing plant in
Estrogaga, Guatemala told him that the company sold
directly to the beef processor who supplies McDonald's
outlets."

Then it has got, "In July 1982, 'Natura', a West
German magazine published an article about the destruction
of middle America's tropical forests. In the story
McDonald's was linked to the 'ethological catastrophe'
because the story alleged they used beef from the region.
In response McDonald's took legal action against the
magazine and 'Natura' printed a 'correction' stating that
McDonald's used only beef from 'cattle grazed in North
America'. Still sceptical, the magazine has stated that it
plans to proceed with legal action against McDonald's on
the grounds that 'it is a criminal act under German press
law to force a publication to print a disclaimer based on
lies'.
