Day 278 - 11 Jul 96 - Page 11

you personally did not have first hand sources, you had not
been there yourself, you had not heard the conversation
yourself, you would not, you know, you would not -- well,
you just wouldn't get anywhere really.

  Q. Then, please, look at the second black triangle: "Raping
the Earth. The world's beautiful rainforests are being
destroyed at an appalling rate by companies like McDonald's
and Burger King who use lethal poisons to clear the jungle
for cattle ranching. There are 100,000 cattle ranches in
Amazonia and" -- notice the word, and -- "it takes 800
square miles of forest just to keep McDonald's supplied
with paper for one year." That is a fair summary of the
       fact sheet is it not?
       A. If I had have been doing a leaflet from the fact sheet
into a short leaflet I would not personally have written
       that, no.

  Q. All right. Can we then turn, please, to tab 66?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I was just making a note, Mr. Rampton. Where
was that again, that second bit?
       A. It was on the first page in the second paragraph.

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry, my Lord, it starts at the left hand
column, bottom of page 3, "Raping the Earth", and I read
down to the middle of the second column. I could read on:
"An area of forest the size of Wales is felled every
month." I should include that for completeness, I
       suppose.

Then please turn to tab 66, and I am not going to read
any of it except to draw your attention to the fact that
save for the dates which have been altered by hand on the
second page, page 191 that we looked at yesterday, this is
the identical document, is it not, October 1990?
       A. Looks like it, yes.

  Q. And writs were served in?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It seems fairly conclusive, but you accept
that that is the A5 leaflet, obviously it has been blown up
now, which was being handed out on 16th October 1989 at the
       picket do you?
       A. No, as I said before, there are quite a few varieties
of A5 leaflets and I do not specifically know which one was
       being handed out in 1989.

  Q. So you do not accept that that was the form of A5 leaflet,
that form of A5 leaflet, whether or not there were others
as well being handed out on 16th October?
       A. I can't say, I don't know, it may have been, but it
could equally have been other versions.

  Q. And even looking at the fact that it refers to the fayre on
21st October, which is five days afterwards?
       A. But the point is, "do I know", and the answer is, "no,
       I don't".

MR. RAMPTON: Please turn to tab 84, which has got the date. I
