Day 278 - 11 Jul 96 - Page 17
they have wanted to speak to me I have not, but--

Q. So the fact that the press were here, one of the rare
occasions when the press were here in any numbers, for
Mr. Preston's resumed cross-examination, that was nothing
to do with you or Mr. Morris; is that right?
A. I cannot speak for Mr. Morris, I do not know.

Q. You set it up did you not?
A. I believe that the support campaign put out a press
release. I do not know.

Q. Before we go on to Spotlight, tell me about the support
campaign. It started shortly after the writs were issued
did it not?
A. Yes.

Q. In those days whom did it consist of in the Mclibel support
campaign?
A. Generally various warehouse people who had been
involved in London Greenpeace and a couple of others.

Q. Including the five defendants?
A. No, not Jonathan and not Dave.

Q. So when the Mclibel support campaign--
A. No, I was just going to say, because Jonathan more or
less from the start, because of personal reasons, felt
unable to fight the case. Mr. Gravett at first wanted to
fight the case, and I do not think it was until, I think,
originally after we had got the initial advice Mr.
O'Farrell felt that for personal reasons he could not fight
the case. He was prepared to make a reluctant apology.
Then some time after that Mr. Clarke decided that he too
would. Mr. Gravett still wanted to fight the case until, I
think, it was very shortly before the apology was actually
give that he changed his mind, and Mr. Morris was not
really around so he did not get involved.

Q. So the stuff that Mclibel support campaign puts out goes
out without any participation by you or Mr. Morris; is that
right?
A. Some of it, yes.

Q. And the stuff that is taken from materials in the case --
documents, transcripts, remarks about discovery, that is
nothing to do with you or Mr. Morris?
A. We check some of the stuff that goes out, yes.

Q. You would not let them put out stuff that was untrue now
would you?
A. No, I would not.

Q. No. Well, we will have a look at some of their stuff later
on in the light of that answer. You made a great thing
yesterday about being anxious never to mislead the public
did you not?
A. I have no desire to mislead the public. I do try to be
as truthful and as honest as it is possible to be.
