Day 286 - 24 Oct 96 - Page 07

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have numbers of restaurants quite well
       sorted out in my mind.

  MR. MORRIS: Right.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I then understand this, which is one thing we
have been asking -- it is not a criticism, I know they have
had other things to do; can I take it that the numbers of
restaurants stated in the various annual reports we have in
       the files are agreed?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

  MR. RAMPTON: Thank you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am pleased to hear that, because I have
made a note that there were 63 in 1990 and 243 in 1995.

MR. MORRIS: I thought it was 263.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I took that from the report.

MR. MORRIS: Right. I am sure it will not make a big
difference, but my note was 263 and I did check it, but I
have not brought it with me today, the annual report.

So it is clear that McDonald's is a growing and extensive
presence in Brazil, which will not come as any surprise to
people in Brazil because of McDonald's international
reputation. The turnover at their stores is always, as we
have heard in this case in general, much greater than
initially might meet the eye, so that 260 stores may not
sound like much, but it is an enormous volume of beef. For
example, in this country they only have 700 stores, but
that results in a million patties being produced every
day. It is probably more than that now, one and half
       million or something.

And remembering the fact that we have to multiply that by
something like ten, the volume of beef, to relate it to the
actual amount of cattle that need to be raised to supply
McDonald's beef supplies, raw material. Yes, multiply by
ten to get the number of cattle, as a rough guide. So,
whenever Mr. Rampton gives you figures for volume of beef
we would submit that you have to multiply that by
approximately ten to get the real volume that has to be
reared and raised directly for McDonald's use.

Now, in terms of where the supplies are, there is no point
in me saying the obvious. We have all got the Morganti
map. I don't know if you have added the extra places
       identified in his final statement?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, what I did is, I have not... There
were a great number of them.

  MR. MORRIS: There were, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I see I have done, I cannot at this
moment remember why, I put a whole lot of pencilled circles
