Day 309 - 03 Dec 96 - Page 08

What I cannot understand, for some reason I have -- I think
I can understand what I wrote now. If the 17-year-old male
was sticking to his, let us say, 2750 kilocalories a day,
or 2760, one-third of that, say, 33 per cent, that is
taking 33 as the total fat figure which you have under your
VRVs would be about 920, the fat would produce about 920 if
the 2755 calories, that is about a third, 920 being about a
       third of 2760.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And if he has had 390 of that in that meal,
391.5 in fact -- I am not seeking at the moment to draw any
conclusions from this -- he has had about 40 per cent, if
my arithmetic is right, of his total fat allowance.
I realise that is a grossly over-simplified way of putting
it. But he has had about 40 per cent of it in that meal,
has he not, 390 over 920?

MR. RAMPTON: I am trying to work it backwards.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If someone divides 390 by 921, one will have
a percentage, and I am suggesting it will come out at about
       40. I did not bring my calculator down.

MR. RAMPTON: It may be. I was going to do it another way, by
dividing the 391.5 by 9 and see how many grams that would
       be.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Another way of putting is that the one-third,
33 per cent, of 2760 is 920. Since a gram of fat produces
9 kilocalories, that is the equivalent of about 102 grams
       of fat.

MR. RAMPTON: Which is, my Lord? I am sorry. 895 kilocalories
       is 99.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 920 kilocalories is 33 per cent, that is the
       total fat VRV, of 2755.

  MR. RAMPTON: I see, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 920 kilocalories, being the 33 per cent total
fat, is about 102 grams of fat. He has had 43.5 grams of
that, so he has had about 40 per cent of his fat allowance
for the day in that one meal.

MR. MORRIS: About 42 per cent, I think.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not being precise. I am just
       generalising.

MR. RAMPTON: Of his fat allowance, yes, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And he has had -----

MR. RAMPTON: That is right. There is a passage later on in the
text where I actually deal with that question; what
proportion of the DRV for fat is contributed for each of
