Well, how do I begin? I admit I'm about as good as Bob Dole is when it
comes to communications skills, but let's give it a try:Well, to get by, the most important thing you need is food and water.
You also need clothing, and a place to hang your hat at night. Last time
I checked, there are few places to get these for free. You need income
to obtain the above, and with most of us, that entails working for
someone, be it a small business or franchise owner, or a small, medium,
or gigantic corporation. And to get there, you need transportation of
some sort. In my neck of the woods, public transportation sucks where
they have it, and it doesn't exist in most of the Mid-Cities section
of the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I'm not going to buy a car or truck from
a small company with limited capital (Anyone remember American Motors?).
Ford (I own a Ford Tempo), GM, Chrysler, Toyota, and Nissan (I won't get
into the Domestic vs. Import debate) have the financisl resources and
stability to properly design and engineer their automobiles, trucks, and
vans. I'm sure all ex-Yugo owners will agree with me on that!
But getting back to source of income, one way or another you need it.
The alternative to working for someone else is to start your own
business. You need to borrow money for capital, and to meet your
liabilities, of which there will be plenty when you are starting.
Most banks are roadblocks to the beginning process. You can count on
getting absolute zero support, be it business advice or a loan, at most
of these banks and S & L's (I never said I agreed with everything in the
corporate world.). Here in the States, that means going to the Small
Business Administration, and enduring all that bullshit Government
red tape. And the odds are nearly 100% against your business making it.
But if you do succeed and grow, you will likely need to hire help, and
it is just not possible to pay them a salary that matches your own
income, and still keep your business solvent. And you too will be
flamed as a rich-selfish-arrogant-asshole by left-wing politicians who
have never had a real job, and by the welfare-and-foodstamp crowd, of
which many of those are able-bodied, and just too lazy to get off their
ass. To paraphrase some lyrics written by Roger Waters, I say "Fuck all
that!" I have to be paid somehow. It's much easier to work for someone
else.
Before I go, again a lot of money is not a bad thing, provided you
actually make an effort to earn it. Pete Towneshend was very much to
the point on the money part as a big reason for reuniting The Who
in 1989. "America is gonna send me back very rich!"
