: Good question. Would these computers that Anti-capitalists are so fond of even exsist if we were in a socialism? I doubt it; the lack of insentive creates lack of invention.

Incentive. Western capitalism's glue. The stuff that binds us all into one sticky web.

Here are the varying incentives of the varying classes of humanity in the capitalist system:

Factory worker in third world country: "It is either work 16 hours a day in this factory built upon our traditional farmland, or starve to death. Maybe both!"

Puppet politician in third world country: "Uncle sam will give me 45 new fighter jets and a couple billion dollars if I help him break the strike at the factory and help identify agitators."

Protectionist american worker without a union: "If I support uncle sam's efforts he will ensure that my cable TV rates won't double for at least another year!"

Protectionist american worker in typical trade union: "If we can scab the competition when they are out on strike, we can force them out of business, and then we can buy the new big-screen TV, and who cares about the cable rates!"

Manager in american conglomerate: "If I can lay off an additional 8,000 workers, my boss will get some big dividends, and I might get a raise or even a bonus. That lexus will sure look good under my but during morning rush hour!"

Puppet politician in ruling country:"Helping corporate america expand overseas will be good for the 'economy', as we get to deliver an additional 45 fighter jets to keep those agitators and troublemakers at work!"

CEO: "I'd sure like to trade my 80 foot yacht for the 160 footer, with helicopter. Then I can get away from it all!"

A yes, incentive.
