SlaveryWhat slavery is. Information about slavery in the New World – first with Indians, then with slaves taken from Africa. Today, we regard slavery as wrong because it is cruel and hurts other people. But hundreds of years ago people thought that slavery was acceptable for "lesser" races of people (which usually meant anyone who wasn't European). They believed that "uncivilised" peoples would benefit from living alongside Europeans and learning about European culture and values.
