Hakata city developed as a trading city from around the 12th century on. It is one of the cities closest located to the Asian mainland.
In the beginning of the 17th century, another city developed around the new built Fukuoka castle close to Hakata. The two cities, Fukuoka and Hakata, melted more and more together until they were united in the year 1889 into one city with the name Fukuoka. The main JR station is still called Hakata. Today Fukuoka is the largest city on the island of Kyushu and the eighth largest one of Japan. |
