Shellder: Give me a Water Stone!

When looking at all the choices of Water PokΘmon there are most people would overlook Shellder as a weakling, and I'd agree with them. But don't pass Shellder over! He is valuable! Why you ask? Because of evolution. Evolution is what saved Shellder. Alright, now lets take a peek at his stats.
Shellder is your average, un-evolved Water PokΘmon. His stats are relatively low, and he starts out with relatively weak moves. However, he does have the potential to learn some very strong moves. In his arsenal are moves such as Clamp, Ice Beam, Aurora Beam, and Supersonic. And this does not include the moves he can learn with TMs. Using TMs you can teach him moves such as Hyper Beam, Toxic, and Surf among others. Shellder can be very troublesome to raise though, lets look at a few reasons why.
Well, for starters, Shellder is, as I stated previously, a weak PokΘmon. He starts out with weak moves and is only good against Rock, Ground and Fire type PokΘmon. He can be found in Seafoam Islands, a cave full of water PokΘmon. In this area he is utterly useless, however it is wise to capture one anyway. Shellder is only useful at Cinnabar Island, since you find almost nothing but Fire PokΘmon there. But he is still vulnerable, even to fire PokΘmon. Because of the power of fire moves, Shellder can, in many cases, be knocked out by a single Flamethrower, only compounding his uselessness. But Shellder does have one upside...evolution!
Evolution is the only reason to raise a Shellder. Unless you're a die hard Shellder fan this is probably the reason you'll be raising your Shellder to get a Cloyster. So in that interest I'll tell you some of the best places, and ways, to raise Shellder.
The easiest way to raise a Shellder, especially if its at a low level, is the immediate retreat method. Simply stated you go to the Elite Four with 5 strong PokΘmon and your Shellder, you then put him in your starting position. Now as soon as he goes out you switch him with one of your other PokΘmon, thereby gaining Shellder a huge amount of experience points, and possibly gaining multiple levels at once. Now if you do not like this method there are others, they are harder, but doable.
The best location to raise Shellder is Cinnabar Island. Because of the abundance of fire PokΘmon it is much easier for him to score knockouts. Another good place, once you've gotten him to around level 45, is Victory Road. There are lots of rock PokΘmon there and he does well against rock PokΘmon.
Now when your raising Shellder you have lots of different choices move wise. So I'll give you a few quick tips. Number one, always make sure he knows Clamp and Ice Beam, never delete either of those. Number two, never underestimate the usefulness of Supersonic, it can be very disabling. Three, Toxic can be very effective, if you don't use your Toxic TM on one of your other PokΘmon, give it to Shellder, he can do wonders with it!
Once you have your Shellder up to level 50 its time for evolution, so pick up your Water Stone and move on over to the Cloyster section!

The lights flash around the stadium, the crowd is cheering wildly, two PokΘmon trainers face each other. "Go Cloyster!" yells one.
"Go Articuno!" the other yells. The two PokΘmon come out, ready to fight.
"Wow! This looks to be a great battle! We have two of the strongest PokΘmon Trainers in the League here, both using an Ice PokΘmon, its going to be a long battle folks" the announcer says.
"Cloyster, start it off with Supersonic!" the trainer yells, the Cloyster emits high pitch waves at the Articuno, confusing it.
"Articuno! Try to get it with fly!" the Articuno looks at its trainer for a second, and then realizes what the trainer wants it to do, it flies up high into the air.
"Cloyster! Be ready for it! Close your shell, withdraw!" the Cloyster encloses itself in its hard shell, suddenly the Articuno comes diving out of the sky, and slams beak first into the ground.
"Oh... It looks like Articuno hurt itself in its confusion!" the announcer yells.
"Now Cloyster! Get it with Aurora Beam!" the Cloyster opens it's shell sending a beautiful, shimmering beam at the Articuno. The Articuno tries to evade but the beam slams into it, it falls to the ground.
"No! Articuno, try to get back into the air!" the Articuno spreads its wings, but they are covered in a thick coating of ice, "Alright, then run up and peck Cloyster!" the Articuno charges at Cloyster, it tries to peck it, but the Cloyster simply closes it's shell.
"Okay! Hit it with Ice Beam while it's close, Cloyster!" The Cloyster opens it shell and covers the Articuno is gleaming ice.
"Oh! It looks like Articuno's been frozen solid!" the announcer yells.
"Okay, Cloyster! Finish it off with Clamp!" the Cloyster approaches the Articuno, closes it shell around it, and squeezes until the Articuno faints.
"Oh and it looks like our winner is Cloyster, Articuno didn't stand a chance!" the announcer yells the crowd is cheering.
"Cloyster! Cloyster! Cloyster!" the Cloyster grins evilly

...

And so I introduce Cloyster, the master of defense, and the greatest Water/Ice PokΘmon there is. He does have a weakness though, he evolves from a weak PokΘmon, the mediocre Shellder. Now lets take a quick look at his stats
Well, for one thing the highest defense in the game. The only new move he can learn is spike cannon, a good move, but not worth evolving before Shellder learns Ice Beam. Now what else does Cloyster have going for him? Special. With Ice moves being able to cause "Frozen Solid," a deadly condition, special is very helpful to Cloyster. Not only that but he is good in all of his other stats also, not great, but good.
But even if you don't know all these stats, you can still tell that Cloyster is good, how, you ask? Well, look at him, look at that evil grin...that healthy shade of jet black...the spikes on his shell, he's no pushover! Okay, now go find yourself a picture of Cloyster. OK now that you have a picture lets point out some his better points. Well, number one is his nice hard shell, the reason he has the highest defense in the game. His evil grin is also great, he looks so sure of himself! Now look at those spikes, that's why he learns Spike Cannon, you wouldn't want those things to blast into you, would you?
Alright now time for some battle strategy, or the do's and don'ts of Cloytser. I'm assuming you won't send him out if he has a weakness, cause that is definitely a don't, never send him out with a weakness unless you have no other choice, or it is against a grass PokΘmon, in which case the Ice moves will give him an advantage! Alright now back to your battle strategy.
When you send him out it is best to open with Supersonic, if you can confuse your opponent it gives you a definite advantage. If you happened to replace Supersonic with a different move, then Clamp is a good opening move, it can stop your opponent from attacking for up to five turns, and it is much stronger than Wrap or Bind. You should then follow up with Surf or Aurora Beam, and continue this until you are ready to knock the opponent out with Ice Beam or Spike Cannon. If you are playing against a grass PokΘmon you should do things a bit differently, just hit the PokΘmon with Ice Beam right away, and try and do as much quick damage as you can. Cloyster should be able to survive one or two hits from a grass PokΘmon, due to his high defense, but probably no more than that. The best thing to do is knock it out as quickly as you can. Now all these strategies can be useful, but no if you taught Cloyster, or deleted, the wrong moves. Your Cloyster should always know Ice Beam or Aurora Beam, you can of course delete one of these and replace it with Blizzard. It also a good idea that your Cloyster knows Clamp. The last space can be filled with an assortment of moves, Surf, Toxic and Hyper Beam are all good candidates. Toxic can be especially effective, and unexpected. After all, wouldn't you be surprised if Cloyster used Toxic on you? And given Cloyster's high defense he can survive multiple hits while Toxic builds up more and more damage. In fact, combined with Clamp or Withdraw, Toxic can be the most effective move in Cloyster's considerable arsenal.
So in closing I'd like to ask you to look at all the choices you have of Water/Ice PokΘmon that you have. If you compare their stats I'm sure you'll find Cloyster to be the best!
