A dark brown, iridescent wading bird with a long, curved bill. The breeding adult has a white line bordering the top and side of the bill (photo below). Non-breeding birds have a streaked head. Length: 49-66 cm.; weight: 485-580 g. Audio (M. Oberle). Breeds in lowlands of the southeastern USA, Cuba, Jamaica and Hispaniola, and in the Old World. Rare in wetlands on Puerto Rico, such as those at Ca±o Tiburones Nature Reserve (e.g.11 September 1998; 18 on 12 March 2001; 14 on 6 June 2001) and Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge.

TAXONOMY: CICONIIFORMES; THRESKIORNITHIDAE; Threskiornithinae. Also called Cigⁿe±a Prieta or Coco Prieto in Spanish.
